Making Strawberry Jam
Imagine the sweet scent of strawberries filling the kitchen while your own jam bubbles in the pot. That's what you can experience today! You will pick strawberries, wash them, and turn them into a delicious spread. Along the way, you'll learn a lot: measuring ingredients, observing changes while cooking, and solving little kitchen problems. How do you make jam without seeds? With a strainer! It takes patience. This will train your hands and your brain. When making jam, you'll work with an adult. Listen, share tasks, and be careful with hot things. In the end, you'll hold a jar of jam that you made yourself. Maybe you'll give it away or try it right on some bread. This is how strawberries turn into a little kitchen adventure.
What you'll need
- 1kg strawberries
- 500g gelling sugar
- 1 pot
- 1 wooden spoon
- 1 strainer
- 1 bowl
- Clean jam jars
- An adult to help
How it works
-
Wash the strawberries thoroughly. Remove the green leaves. Cut the strawberries into small pieces.
-
Put the strawberries in a pot. Mash them with a potato masher or blend them until smooth. You'll get a lot of juice. Take a whiff!
-
Strain the strawberry mixture through a strainer into a cooking pot. The seeds will stay in the strainer. Not working right away? Try different movements.
-
Add the gelling sugar to the strawberry mixture. Stir well. Watch: the sugar slowly disappears into the red fruit puree. Heat the mixture with an adult. Stir gently. After a few minutes, the jam will bubble like a little volcano.
-
Let the jam cook for about 4 minutes according to the package instructions. Keep stirring to prevent burning.
-
Carefully fill the hot jam into several clean jars with an adult. Caution: the jam and jars are very hot! Screw the lids on tightly and let the jars cool down.
