Imagine hammering nails into a wooden disc while learning your times tables. Sounds crazy? It's actually brilliant. Today, you'll build your own calculation star. It helps you understand multiplication better and looks cool too! A calculation star is like a clock, but with math power. Instead of hours, the numbers 0 to 9 are arranged around it. You connect the numbers with a thread according to the multiplication tables. Each multiplication table creates a different pattern. You can see with your eyes how the multiplication tables grow. You understand better how multiplication works, and you remember the tables more easily because you built them. With your hands. With your mind. With your heart.
What you'll need
- Round wooden disc
- Black felt-tip pen
- Hammer and nails
- Colorful wool threads
- Wooden beads
How it works

Take a round wooden disc. Write the numbers 0 to 9 in a circle with the felt-tip pen, like on a clock. Place a small nail over each number. Leave the nails sticking out a bit so you can wrap the thread around them later. This is the base for your calculation star.

Take a colorful wool thread. Attach it to the nail at 0. Now let's start: The 2 times table. 1 × 2 = 2 → thread to 2. 2 × 2 = 4 → continue to 4. 3 × 2 = 6 → then to 6. 4 × 2 = 8 → continue to 8. On your wooden disc, there are only numbers from 0 to 9. So, 10 is back to 0.

Now you can continue: Take another color and start with the 3 times table. Start again at 0 and calculate: 3, 6, 9, 12 (2), 15 (5), 18 (8), 21 (1), 24 (4), 27 (7). You see, the thread creates a new pattern. Some look almost like secret signs.

Now take a new thread. This time, start with the 4 times table. Start at 0 and calculate. 4, 8, 12 (2), 16 (6), 20 (0), 24 (4), 28 (8), 32 (2), 36 (6), 40 (0).

Tip: Say the multiplication problems out loud while wrapping the thread. This helps you memorize the tables better. For example: '3 times 7 is 21 – so I wrap to 1.'

Tip for the 8 times table: Do you recognize the pattern? After five steps, you start over: 0 → 8 → 6 → 4 → 2 → 0 → 8 … This helps with practice and looks really neat on your calculation star!

The 9 times table looks special on your calculation star. It goes backward through all the numbers from 9 to 1 and ends back at 0. And when you've finished, remember: You've created a work of art from numbers. And math? Math suddenly becomes visible. And you're right in the middle of it.
