Beach volleyball is similar to regular volleyball, but you play it on sand. There are two teams with two or more players each, and the goal is to hit the ball over the net onto the opponent's side without them being able to return it. Beach volleyball is a great sport that you can play outdoors on the beach or on a sand court. Not only can you improve your physical fitness, but you can also learn teamwork and tactical thinking. And the best part is, you can have a lot of fun doing it!

What you'll need

  • Beach volleyball
  • Sand court or beach volleyball court
  • Sunscreen
  • Drinking water
  • Sportswear

How it works

  1. First, you need a playing field. An ideal setup is a beach volleyball court with a net in the middle. You also need a volleyball, and it's best to play barefoot. Mark the playing area. Use lines or ropes to outline the court. A standard court is 16 x 8 meters.

  2. Before you start, you need to warm up. Run a few laps around the court. Practice some jumps and ball contacts to get a feel for the ball and the sand.

  3. There are a few basic techniques you need to know. Bumping: Here, you play the ball with both forearms. Stand with your feet apart, slightly bend your knees, and keep your arms stretched and side by side in front of you. Place one hand over the other, with your thumbs pointing forward.

  4. Setting: Here, you play the ball with your fingertips upwards. Make a triangle shape with your thumbs and index fingers, bend your arms, and push the ball upwards. Spiking: This is a powerful hit where you strike the ball over the net with your flat hand.

  5. Now the game can begin! One team starts with the serve. Here are some important rules. The serve must be made from behind the baseline. Hit the ball with your hand over the net. The team has up to three touches to play the ball back over the net.

  6. A point is scored when the ball lands on the opponent's side or if the opponents make a mistake. Beach volleyball requires a lot of teamwork. You need to communicate and coordinate well with each other.

  7. Take your time to practice. Practice makes perfect. The more you play, the better you'll get. Also, protect yourself from the sun and drink enough water. Now you're ready for your first beach volleyball game. Grab a ball, gather your friends, and head to the sand!
