The figure eight knot is a fantastic little helper. Whether you're climbing like a nimble monkey or sailing like a brave pirate, this knot is always by your side. It's strong and secure, yet easy to untie. It's called the figure eight knot because it looks like an 8 that has cozied up to your rope. Learning how to tie it is like solving a little tricky puzzle. And who doesn't love a good puzzle?

What you'll need

  • Rope

How it works

  1. Lay the rope on the ground as if you're making a small lake.

  2. Imagine your rope is a water snake. The snake wraps halfway around itself.

  3. Now the snake dips its head (the free end of the rope) into the lake. Pass the end through the loop (the 'lake') you made at the beginning.

  4. Now pull on both ends of the rope, and voila, you've made a perfect figure eight knot! A great knot that looks just like an 8. Practice makes perfect, so keep at it, and soon you'll be a knot expert.
