What you'll need

  • 1 paper cup
  • Wool yarn (about 50cm long)
  • Small stick or toothpick
  • Red and orange construction paper
  • Craft glue
  • Googly eyes
  • A pair of scissors
  • A little water

How it works

  1. Take the paper cup and carefully make a small hole at the bottom of the cup. The hole should be big enough to thread the wool yarn through, but not so big that the cup tears.

  2. Cut about 50 cm of wool yarn. Thread the yarn through the hole in the paper cup from the outside to the inside. Tie the yarn securely on the outside of the cup using the small stick or half a toothpick. The knot should be tight enough so that the yarn doesn't slip back through the hole.

  3. Cut a comb and two wattles from the red construction paper. For the beak, take the orange paper and cut it into the shape of a beak.

  4. Glue the comb on top of the paper cup's head. The beak goes on the front of the cup. Glue the wattles under the beak so they are nicely visible. Now stick on the googly eyes so your rooster can see too!

  5. Wet the wool yarn a little. Hold the cup firmly and pull quickly and strongly on the yarn. Now a sound similar to a rooster's crow will emerge.

  6. When you pull on the wet wool yarn, it starts to vibrate quickly back and forth. These vibrations create sound waves. The hollow paper cup captures these waves and amplifies them, similar to how a guitar body amplifies the vibrations of the strings.
