Imagine finding colorful leaves in autumn. Red, yellow, brown, maybe even green. Each one looks different. And today, you will create your very own leaf caterpillar! It won't munch on apples, but on real leaves. You'll craft it using cardboard, a pipe cleaner, and your imagination. As you collect, stick, and twist, you'll learn: In nature, every leaf has its shape, color, and story. Your caterpillar grows with each find. In the end, you'll hold a little artwork in your hands, made from what lies outside. And maybe it will even get a name.

What you'll need

Leaves
Old cardboard
A pair of scissors
Pipe cleaner
Markers

How it works

Cut a circle out of the old cardboard. This will be the head of your caterpillar. Draw two eyes and a mouth on it. Carefully poke a small hole in the center so the nose can fit through later.
Push a pipe cleaner through the hole. Twist a small end at the front. That's the nose! Now the long part of the pipe cleaner sticks out at the back.
Go outside and look for many different leaves. Make sure they aren't too dry, or they will tear. Big, small, round, pointed. Everything is welcome! Slide the leaves one by one onto the pipe cleaner, as if the caterpillar is eating them.
The more leaves you add, the longer it will get. Once you have enough leaves, twist the back end of the pipe cleaner a little. This way, no leaves will fall off. Your leaf caterpillar is ready, a piece of autumn to touch!
