Microplastic Detectives
Today you have a very important mission: You will become detectives and search for microplastics on the beach. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are sometimes so small you can hardly see them. But they can be a big problem for sea animals. You will learn why plastic waste is so harmful to the ocean and what you can do to help. Because each of us can contribute to keeping the sea clean and healthy!
What you'll need
- Gloves
- Shovel
- Bucket
- Sieve
How it works
-
Let's search the beach and collect plastic waste. Be especially on the lookout for small, colorful pieces. That could be microplastic.
-
While you collect the waste, think about how it could have ended up in the ocean. And consider what you could do to prevent more waste from entering the sea.
-
Sort your collected waste. How much of it is plastic? And how much could be microplastic? Imagine you are a small fish in the ocean and you see something that looks like delicious food. You swallow it, but oh no! It was actually microplastic.
-
Make a list of things you can do to produce less plastic waste. Maybe you can implement some of them in your daily life! We can all help by using less plastic and ensuring our waste goes in the bin and not in the sea.
-
Tell your friends and family about what you have learned. They might also help use less plastic and protect the oceans.
