Making a Walnut Candle
Have you ever made a walnut candle? It's a great idea for autumn, winter, or the holiday season! With a walnut shell, some beeswax, and a wick, you can quickly create a small candle that not only looks wonderful but also makes a fantastic gift. Your walnut candle is not just decorative but also sustainable. You are using materials that could otherwise end up in the trash. The candle is perfect as a small gift or simply to create a cozy atmosphere on cold days. So, let's get started with the walnuts, here’s your guide!
What you'll need
- Half walnut shells
- Beeswax sheet (scraps)
- Wicks
- Hairdryer
- Glass bowl with water
How it works
-
For your walnut candle, you obviously need a walnut shell. Do you perhaps already have an empty shell at home? If not, you can take a fresh walnut and crack it open. If it doesn't work the first time, that's okay. Just practice a bit.
-
Now it gets exciting. The wick turns your walnut shell into a real candle! Cut a small piece of wick, about as long as your little finger. Place the wick in the center of the walnut shell so that it sticks out at the top.
-
Cut a few small pieces from a beeswax sheet. Take a hairdryer and warm the pieces briefly so they become nice and soft. Be careful not to heat them too long, or they will melt!
-
Now press the soft wax pieces into your walnut shell, gradually around the wick. Make sure the wick always points upwards. Slowly fill the shell to the rim.
-
And your walnut candle is ready! Let it sit for a moment so the wax can harden properly. Now you can think about what to do with your little masterpiece. Maybe you’ll gift it as a 'wish-light' to someone you like.
-
Or you can light it yourself. Fill a glass bowl with water and place the candle on top. Get an adult to light the wick, and watch how the warm light flickers and the walnut shell floats. Important: Never leave the candle burning unattended. Enjoy the wonder!
