Make a Foil Spider with a Marble

Create a little spider that crawls when you give it a push. All you need is some aluminum foil, a marble, and a few creative hands! This craft idea is quick to make, lots of fun, and teaches you how movement works. And who knows, maybe you can even scare someone with it at the end.

What you'll need

Aluminum foil
Marble
Permanent markers
Optional: Wiggly eyes
Scissors

How it works

Cut a piece of aluminum foil. Make sure it's big enough to cover your marble. Place the piece of foil in front of you and smooth it out. This will help you shape the spider's face better.
Take the marker and draw a round circle in the center of the foil for your spider and color it in. Then draw eight spider legs around it. If you have wiggly eyes, stick them above the drawn eyes. This makes the spider look extra lively.
Place the marble on the table in front of you. It will be the spider's 'heart', which you will now bring to 'crawl' with the foil. Gently press the foil onto the marble so that it fits snugly on top.
Carefully set the spider on the table and give it a little push. The marble under the foil will make the spider roll forward as if by magic. Try tilting the table slightly or letting the spider roll up a small 'hill' to see what happens.
The marble moves because it's round and can roll easily. When you push the spider, the movement is transferred to the marble, and it rolls under the foil. This makes the whole spider 'crawl'! Why not make several spiders and have a race.
