Experiment: Magical Milk Patterns

What you'll need

• Milk
• Liquid food coloring
• Dish soap
• Plate
• Q-tip or toothpick

How it works

   Pour some milk onto the plate. It doesn't need to be much, just enough to cover the bottom of the plate.

   Now take your favorite colors of food coloring and drop a few drops onto the milk. Be creative and try different colors! You'll see how the color spreads in the milk, which looks really cool.

   Now comes the exciting part! Dip a Q-tip or a toothpick into the dish soap and then carefully into the milk with the color. What happens? Watch closely as the color suddenly moves and forms a pattern.

   Dip the Q-tip in different spots in the milk and see how the patterns change.

   Did you notice how the colors move in the milk? The fat molecules in the milk flee from the dish soap and take the food coloring with them. This makes the color move on the surface of the milk and creates these cool patterns and movements. Cool, right?
