Edible Crayons

An edible crayon? This is a must-have for a school enrollment party! With a few cuts, a long ice cream cone becomes a little crayon. Then comes the creative part: What color will your crayon be? What sprinkles will you use? Or do you want to spell out ABC, SCHOOL, MATH, or your name with sugar letters? Decorating requires a bit of finesse. You think, experiment, and decide how your crayon should look. Along the way, you also train your fine motor skills and can play with letters and words. It’s especially fun when several kids create a whole collection of crayons together. And the best part: at the end, your masterpiece can simply be nibbled away!

What you'll need

  • long, flat ice cream cones
  • powdered sugar
  • water or lemon juice
  • food coloring
  • colorful sprinkles
  • sugar letters
  • baking brush
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • bowl

How it works

  1. Place the ice cream cone in front of you. Cut the corners diagonally at one end. This creates the typical tip of a crayon. Have an adult help you with the cutting.

  2. Mix powdered sugar with a little water or lemon juice. The icing should be thick and not run off the cone. Divide it into several bowls and color it with food coloring.

  3. Dip only the very tip of the crayon into the colorful icing. Leave a small piece of cone free right behind it. This makes it look like the wood of a sharpened crayon. Can you already see the crayon shape?

  4. Spread the long part of the cone with a brush and icing. As long as the icing is still wet, you can add sprinkles. Or you can use sugar letters to spell out small school words like ABC, SCHOOL, MATH, or SPORT. Maybe your own name fits on the crayon too.

  5. Let your crayons sit until the icing has set. Then you can arrange them on a plate like real crayons. Perfect for the school enrollment buffet, and maybe each guest gets their own nibble crayon!
