What you'll need

  • A safe spot for the campfire
  • Firewood (small and larger branches)
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Long hazel or willow sticks
  • Frozen pretzel sticks
  • A bucket of water or sand

How it works

  1. Find a safe spot for the campfire with your parents. Make sure it is far enough away from houses, trees, and bushes. A fireproof surface is ideal. Use designated fire pits if possible.

  2. Now it's time to gather! You need small branches to start with and larger logs for later. Collect dry twigs that burn well. Be careful not to break live branches from trees. They are usually damp and burn poorly.

  3. First, place the small branches in the center of the fire pit. Build a small pyramid or tent out of them. Leave enough space in the middle for air to circulate. This helps the fire burn. Place the larger logs around this structure.

  4. Ask your parents to help you. With a match or lighter, you can light the small branches in the middle. Be patient; it sometimes takes a little while for the fire to really catch.

  5. While the fire is burning, you can prepare your sticks. Take fresh sticks from a tree, preferably hazel or willow sticks. Remove the bark from one end so you have a smooth surface to skewer the bread. Make sure the sticks are long enough.

  6. Take the frozen pretzel sticks out of the freezer. Let them thaw for a few minutes until they are soft enough to wrap around the sticks. Now wrap the pretzel dough around the prepared end of the stick. Press the dough tightly so it doesn’t fall into the fire.

  7. Hold your sticks with the bread over the embers, not directly in the flames. Slowly turn the sticks so that the bread bakes evenly. Be patient and watch closely – it takes a little while for the bread to become golden brown and crispy. You'll see, it's worth it! Don't burn yourself!
