The Magic Balloon
Imagine being able to inflate a balloon without blowing into it! In this exciting experiment, you'll learn something about chemistry. You'll be amazed at how your balloon grows as if by magic!
What you'll need
- Empty bottle
- Balloon
- Vinegar
- Funnel
- Baking soda or bicarbonate of soda
- Markers for decorating
How it works

First, draw a funny or spooky face or a symbol (depending on your theme) on the balloon. Let your creativity flow!

Fill the empty bottle about one-third full with vinegar. Insert the funnel into the neck of the balloon and fill the balloon with baking soda or bicarbonate of soda. Be careful not to spill anything.

Gently stretch the edge of the balloon over the bottle neck without letting the baking soda fall into the bottle yet.

Now, lift the balloon slightly so that the baking soda falls into the bottle. Watch closely! The vinegar reacts with the baking soda and produces a gas. That's how you get an inflated balloon – without blowing!
