What you'll need

  • 4 fresh lemon halves
  • 4 zinc nails
  • 4 copper coins
  • alligator clips with wires
  • 1 LED

How it works

  1. Place four lemon halves in front of you. Insert a zinc nail and a copper coin into each lemon half. Make sure they do not touch each other.

  2. Connect the copper from one lemon to the zinc of the next lemon using alligator clips. This creates a long circuit.

  3. Connect the long leg of the LED to the free wire of the copper coin. Connect the short leg to the free wire of the zinc nail. If nothing lights up, flip the LED around.

  4. The lemon juice contains acid that helps the metals move energy. The zinc nail and the copper coin are different, which is why electricity is generated between them. This electricity flows through the wires to the LED and makes it light up.
