What you'll need

Pick-your-own field nearby?
Small change (50 to 80 cents per piece)
Comfortable clothes, possibly rubber boots
Knife or garden scissors (often available on site)

How it works

Ask an adult if they can take you to a tulip field where you can pick your own. It's usually marked with a sign. Caution: Not every flower field can be entered freely. Only those that explicitly allow it.
Walk slowly between the rows. Which color do you like? Which tulip is still tightly closed? The more closed the bloom, the longer it will last in the vase later. Look closely. Does it smell? Is it standing straight? Choose each flower consciously.
Take the garden scissors or a knife. Carefully cut the tulip just above the ground. Hold it firmly without bending it. Each flower is special, treat it that way.
Count exactly how many tulips you have. Calculate. If one flower costs 50 cents and you have five, how much is that?
Then go to the small cash register with your bunch of tulips. Drop in the money. Done. No one around. But a lot of trust. That's the beauty here: that someone believes you can do it right.
