Oobleck - Making Magic Mud
Today, we have an exciting project for you that's a lot of fun: You're going to make Oobleck! Oobleck is a cool substance that can be both solid and liquid at the same time. It looks a bit like concrete, but it's much more fun!
What you'll need
- 2 cups cornstarch
- 1 cup water
- A handful of coffee grounds
- Bowl
- Spoon
How it works
-
Prepare a large bowl. Add 2 cups of cornstarch to the bowl. Cornstarch is a fine, white powder made from corn.
-
Pour in 1 cup of water and stir well. You'll see that the mixture becomes thick and sticky.
-
Add the coffee grounds and mix everything well. The coffee grounds will give your Oobleck an interesting texture.
-
Take some Oobleck in your hand. Squeeze tightly – it will become hard. Let it slowly slip through your fingers – it will turn liquid! You've now created your own magic mud!
-
Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid that behaves differently than water. It becomes solid when pressure is applied and liquid when moved slowly.
-
You've learned how different materials react. Oobleck shows you how exciting science can be! Have fun experimenting and playing with your homemade Oobleck and discover how amazing it is to experience science up close!
-
Note: Oobleck can make a bit of a mess, so be prepared to clean up afterward. Wash your hands and the bowl thoroughly. If Oobleck gets on the floor or table, just wipe it up with a damp cloth.
