Making Kinetic Sand
Today, you're going to do something really exciting: you're making your own kinetic sand! Kinetic sand is a special type of sand that feels moist and is easy to shape. You can press it, mold it, and feel it. By making your own sand, you can choose the colors yourself and see exactly what’s in your play material. It's not only safe but also a ton of fun! Let's get started! Just follow the steps!
What you'll need
- 8 cups of flour
- 1 cup of baby oil or cooking oil
- Bowl
- Food coloring
- A few small bowls for the colors
- Spoon for mixing
How it works

Pour 8 cups of flour into the large bowl. Slowly add 1 cup of oil and mix both well. You can use your hands or a spoon if you don't want it to get too sticky. Mix everything until it feels a bit like damp beach sand.

When the sand is moldable, it's perfect! Divide the sand into the smaller bowls. You can make as many colors as you like.

Now add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl. You can experiment with the colors: more drops make the color darker, fewer drops make it lighter.

Mix the color thoroughly into the sand. This is a bit like kneading. Press and pull the sand until the color is evenly distributed. Once you're happy with the color, let the sand dry a bit in the air so it’s not too wet.

Now that your sand is ready, you can start playing! You can: • Build castles and small figures. • Write or draw in the sand. • Shape 'ice creams' from the sand. Maybe you use an ice cream scoop, small cups, or cones for the sand ice cream. Have fun playing!
