Learning Ten Transitions
Hello, number adventurers! Today, you’re going on an exciting journey to explore the magical land of ten transitions. Imagine numbers as steps on a giant staircase. Sometimes, we need to skip a high step to reach the next ten step. This is called a "ten transition." Let’s embark on our number mission!
What you'll need
- chalk (if available)
How it works
-
Let’s start simple: Count from 1 to 10. At 10, you’ve reached your first ten step. Well done!
-
Now let’s make it a bit more exciting: If you hold up 9 pencils and add 2 more, how many pencils do you have? That’s right, 11! You jumped from 9 to 11, skipping 10.
-
Imagine you have 8 cookies and get 3 more. How many cookies do you have now? Count them together and you’ll see: You have 11 cookies. You skipped the ten step!
-
Now let’s try it the other way: You have 13 marbles and lose 4. How many marbles do you have left? Exactly, 9! You jumped from 13 to 9, skipping 10.
-
If you have 7 gummy bears and get 5 more, how many do you have then? Right, you jump over 10 and land on 12.
-
For the last task: Draw a hopscotch from 1 to 20. Challenge each other. Which numbers do you land on?
